Our 10-Point Sustainable Criteria - Bournville Primary School

Bournville Primary School in Weston-super-Mare, built for North Somerset Council

Bournville Primary School in Weston-super-Mare, completed in May 2010, is one example of how we achieve our unique 10-Point Sustainable Project Criteria on projects.

1. Client commitment to making it a sustainable project

North Somerset Council continually demonstrated its commitment to delivering sustainable projects, including attending our sustainability workshop to devise ways to make it low carbon and also implemented the resulting action plan.

2. BREEAM rating

Bournville Primary School achieved BREEAM ‘Excellent’, exceeding the targeted ‘Very Good’ that was originally set.

3. Sustainability workshop

Our in-house low carbon, sustainability arm Re-Thinking facilitated a series of workshops, with a consequent action plan developed for achieving our sustainability objectives for the school.

4. Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

An EPC B-rating with a score of 36 was achieved, exceeding the targeted C-rating.

5. Recycled content by value

The use of recycled content to create the new school was calculated at 22%, exceeding the target of 20%.

6. Waste - % diverted from landfill

In keeping with most projects, 98% of waste we generated was diverted from landfill. Examples of how this was achieved included our groundwork contractor developing an innovative process to divert more than 8,000m3 of excavated waste from landfill for reuse on other projects.

7. Post occupancy evaluation

Every project we build has a post occupancy evaluation (POE), to ensure we capture and learn important informaton about our building and use it on future projects. We are the only company that does this as standard. A POE will take place at Bournville in 2011 - typically 18 months after completion.

8. Whole life costs and life cycle analysis

Whole life cost reports were produced by Re-Thinking and used by the client to make decisions on choosing key materials and equipment for the school, based on long term value rather than short term cost.

9. Considerate Constructors Scheme

The project achieved a Considerate Constructors Scheme score of 36 out of 40, exceeding the target of 32

10. Directly associated community project

A number of community projects were undertaken on the project, including a highly successful reading mentoring programme facilitated by the construction team to encourage reading amongst local children

Adam Matthews, headteacher, said, "This is an outstanding example of how a company can make a positive and lasting contribution to a project.  Partnership, collaboration, going that extra yard and, most importantly, the willingness to engage with and become part of our community ensured that this project was going to be a success from the off. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work with you all."
