Staines Road in Hounslow is London's first housing project to reach Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) level six.
The zero carbon development for Catalyst Housing Group aims to be an exemplar for delivering highly sustainable, low carbon-emitting homes in a busy urban location. Starting on site in late 2010, the development comprises 14 flats and four houses for rent and shared ownership. Highly innovative features and technologies include supply of all heating and hot water requirements via a biomass-fuelled boiler and the application of 450 square metres of photovoltaic panels over the roof area.
High levels of insulation, mechanical ventilation and heat recovery, high efficiency appliances and lighting, low flow water use appliances and a rainwater recycling system mean that residents will benefit from lower utility bills. Built close to Heathrow Airport, elevations on the main road are being incorporated to act as acoustic buffers. Solar shading panels will keep the structures cool in summer, and dedicated residents’ allotments are also included within the scheme.
