Delivering to Code level five and six
Willmott Dixon is working with Catalyst Housing Group to create 18 homes in Hounslow that will reach level six in the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) - the first in London! Achieving this high specification will be done through a combination of technologies; 450 square metres of photovoltaic panels, biomass plant and rainwater harvesting. The units will also be super insulated to ensure they have very low U values. Solar shading panels will also keep the structures cool in summer.

Another sustainable development to create eight homes is taking place at Peartree Way and Cotney Croft in Stevenage for Home Group. Seven will meet CfSH level five and the eighth will demonstrate how level six can be achieved economically using current building techniques.
The Stevenage homes will be highly airtight (achieving a value of 4m3/h/m2@50Pa), while the timber frame construction allows for U-values as low as 0.12 to be achieved. This is a 40% improvement on the typical value of Level 3 homes. All of the homes will have photovoltaic panels, totalling over 100 square metres, with excess electricity fed back to the National Grid. Rainwater harvesting together with water-efficient equipment should reduce water usage to 80 litres per person per day. The UK average use is some 150 litres per person per day.
