I suppose I have always showed an interest in construction; I remember as a child spending many a school holiday building structures out of my Lego set. In my secondary school days the subjects I most enjoyed were Maths and Technical Drawing and when it came to making a decision on what to do at 16 years old I decided that a career in construction was for me. I joined Willmott Dixon Construction in July 1996 as an Assistant Project Surveyor after the recommendation “they are a good employer that look after their staff.” Working for Willmott Dixon has provided me with the opportunity to work on a variety of exciting projects in the Commercial, Leisure and Education Sectors for both Public and Private Clients.
Education
Upon leaving school I enrolled at the Technical College on the OND Building Studies course with the aim of becoming an Architect. This changed however when a friend of the family told me about his job in construction. He travelled all over the country and was never stuck in the office; this was something that appealed to me. I spent the next 5 years studying to be a Quantity Surveyor, first on a 3 year HND course and then on a 2 year BSc Hons conversion course. This education was supplemented by placement and holiday work at a local construction company which put theory into practice.
Projects
Recent projects I have been involved with include:
Cowley Language College Redevelopment, St Helens - Value £21m
Rolls Crescent Primary School, Manchester Framework One - Value £4.5m
Green End Primary School, Manchester Framework One - Value £4.5m (Quality in Construction Winner - Projects up to £5m Category)
David Lloyd Leisure Clubs (Various), Nationwide - Value £6m to £8m
Aims
My aim when I started with the Company was to progress to a senior level. The opportunities for career development within Willmott Dixon have helped me achieve that initial goal. Being a member of a professional body is also encouraged and supported and I am in the final stages of becoming MCIOB. The continued success of the business means that the local construction offices are still expanding. As further opportunities arise and the Company grows, I hope to continue to grow with it.
