Willmott Dixon appointed for £20 million university

Willmott Dixon, the UK’s highest placed contractor in the recent Sunday Time Green List, has secured a £20 million contract to create a new building which will house the Department of Media and Communications, and provide additional facilities to benefit all students at Goldsmiths, University of London, in New Cross, South East London.

The new facility, a four-storey steel framed building with basement, will be built on the existing campus and house a range of specialist rooms including radio,TV and photographic studios and darkrooms, as well as a 250 seat lecture theatre, teaching rooms and offices. The new building will ensure Goldsmiths reputation for excellence in Media & Communications is supported by new enhanced purpose-built facilities.

The building will be very striking in appearance, fronted by a dramatic glass façade, and will be clad elsewhere in pixel effect terra cotta tiles.

Goldsmiths aims for its new facility to achieve a “Very Good” BREEAM rating for the new facility. This will be supported by natural ventilation throughout, aided by four large wind towers on the roof.

The project is being carried out by Willmott Dixon’s Dartford office, which is working with architect Stride Treglown. The team will complete the new building by August 2010.

Rob Lambe, managing director for Willmott Dixon’s Dartford office said, “We’ve worked very hard already to get to this stage and are looking forward to starting on site soon. We will try where possible to award significant construction work packages to local companies in order to support the regional economy."
