The country has two major demographic issues; obesity and an aging population. It is clear that solutions will be required which cross the traditional boundaries between health and social care.
For example, to reduce and prevent obesity it is vital that good quality, accessible and enticing leisure facilities are available. These can also double act as treatment facilities – for example a fitness gym can be used for physiotherapy for patients who have had strokes or trauma.
Concepts such as Joint Service Centres and Healthy Living Centres are now being developed and complement previous initiatives to collocate child health, education and social services together.
